The town stands where the Brenta emerges from the narrow Canal di Brenta and opens onto the plain, between Monte Grappa and the plateau of the Seven Communes. It is a crossing point that made it a trading centre for centuries, and that explains why its emblem is a bridge.
A bridge is documented here from 1209, and its history is a sequence of destructions: fortified with towers in 1315, swept away by a flood in 1439, burned by retreating French troops in 1511, levelled by another brentana in 1567. It was then that the town turned to Andrea Palladio. In 1569 the architect first proposed a stone bridge of three arches on the Roman model, but the town council preferred to stay with timber, thought better suited to the fury of the river. Palladio accepted and designed an entirely wooden structure, elastic on its piers, able to yield to the current rather than resist it: an engineering solution that worked. In 1945 partisans blew it up to slow the Nazi-Fascist advance, and the National Alpine Association rebuilt it where it was and as it was, giving it the name everyone knows today. It has been a national monument since 2019.
At the foot of the bridge, in 1779, Bortolo Nardini bought the premises of the Osteria del Ponte and installed a still: thus was born Italy’s oldest distillery, still working on the same site. Nearby, the Grappa Museum tells the story of the spirit that made the town’s name famous. The other craft tradition is ceramics, from Bassano and neighbouring Nove, documented in the museum housed in Palazzo Sturm, whose windows offer one of the best views over the Brenta and the bridge.
The centre keeps its walled layout with the Ezzelini castle, Porta Dieda and arcaded streets: it is comfortably walked. Bassano is a base for the foothills and the mountains: on Monte Grappa, a battleground of the First World War, stand the military ossuary and the sanctuary; close by lie Asolo, Marostica with its chessboard square and Possagno, birthplace of Antonio Canova.
