Where to stay in Riva del Garda

Lake Garda ends here, hemmed in by rock walls dropping vertically to the water and making the landscape more Alpine than lacustrine. It is the lake’s only Trentino stretch, and its Mediterranean climate coexists with the Brenta Dolomites close by.

The wind

Two thermal breezes blow with almost clockwork regularity: the Pelèr comes down from the north in the morning, the Ora rises from the south in the afternoon. This constancy has made the upper Garda one of Europe’s busiest spots for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, with schools and marinas open most of the year. The same conformation — water, rock and trails — also suits climbing, via ferratas and mountain biking.

The centre and the Ponale

Piazza III Novembre, facing the old harbour with its Venetian arcades, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Apponale Tower — thirty-four metres, built in the thirteenth century, one hundred and sixty-five steps to the terrace — is reckoned among Italy’s finest lakeside squares. The medieval Rocca, surrounded by water, houses the Alto Garda Museum. From the centre starts the Ponale path: the old road cut into the rock that linked the lake to the Ledro valley, open to traffic until the 1980s and turned into a cycle and footpath in 2004. It runs sheer above the water and remains the area’s most spectacular walk.

Nearby

A few kilometres away, the Varone waterfall drops some ninety metres into a gorge carved over twenty thousand years by the stream running down from Lake Tenno; the park has been open to the public since 1874, making it one of Trentino’s oldest tourist sites. The Ponale path reaches Lake Ledro, home to a pile-dwelling site inscribed by UNESCO. The Venetian Bastion of 1508 is a quarter of an hour’s walk from the centre.

When to go

From April to October the climate is mild and everything is running; July and August concentrate demand. Spring and autumn are ideal for the trails and for cycling, with temperatures better suited to the climbs. Trento is an hour by car, Madonna di Campiglio a little more.
