Village centre or Limone 1400?
The centre is the most versatile choice: restaurants, shops, station and lifts within a stroll — and it’s where nearly all the small hotels we recommend are.
Limone 1400, higher up, hosts the “Carosello” with the easy runs loved by beginners and ski schools. Sleep up there and you wake up practically on the slopes, but in the evening the village means a car or a shuttle.

Vernante: sleeping in Pinocchio’s village, 10 minutes from the slopes
Ten minutes down the valley, Vernante is the plan B that’s often a plan A: a real village, famous for its murals dedicated to Pinocchio, with its own station on the Cuneo-Ventimiglia line.
And — the numbers’ little surprise — some of the best-rated places in the whole area are here. Stay in Vernante if you love village quiet, if Limone is full over winter holidays, or simply if you want the highest possible score for your budget.
The honest downside: reaching the lifts takes a car, the train or a hotel shuttle. In exchange, dinner happens in a real village rather than on a strip of ski shops. The three best in town:

When to go
Winter (December-March)
High season: slopes, a renewed snowpark and a lively village. With the new flow of visitors from the French Riviera, weekends and school holidays fill up earlier than they used to — the January weeks outside the holidays remain the best balance of snow, prices and quiet.
Summer
By now Limone’s true second season: from early July the lifts reopen for the bike park and hiking, the Via del Sale draws cyclists from half of Europe, and on Lake Terrasole, at 1,776 metres, the summer music festival returns with concerts on the floating stage.
It’s also the right season for families who ask the mountains for walks and fresh air rather than adrenaline.
Shoulder seasons
November and May are quiet, and several places close for holidays. But if all you want is silence, low-altitude trails and Piedmontese cooking, it’s the best-value compromise of the year — just check opening dates before booking.
How to get there
By car from Turin: A6 motorway to Cuneo, then the SS20 towards the Colle di Tenda — about an hour and a half in total. From Liguria and the French Riviera you come through the Tenda Tunnel, open again after the long closure: it’s this reopened link that reignited traffic from the coast.
By train, both Limone and Vernante have stations on the Cuneo-Ventimiglia line, the historic railway climbing from the valleys to the sea. It’s one of the few places in the Alps where a car-free ski week is genuinely easy: the lifts are walkable from Limone station.
One detail that makes the Limone-Vernante pair more flexible than it looks: between the two villages, the train works as a natural shuttle. You can sleep in the village and ski from the station without ever touching a car.
