Ponza: where to stay on the island
The heart of Ponza is the harbour: an amphitheatre of pink, yellow and white houses tumbling down to the water, with the restaurants, the shops and the departure points for boat trips. Staying nearby is the handiest choice, because this is where everything starts — the boats to the coves, the hydrofoils, the evening life. The beaches within walking distance are Sant’Antonio and Santa Maria; the others are reached by boat.

Ventotene: the small, authentic island
Ventotene is the opposite of a glamorous resort: tiny, silent, with an ancient Roman harbour carved into the tufa and a marine reserve surrounding it. It’s the island where, in 1941, Altiero Spinelli wrote the Ventotene Manifesto, and for this it’s remembered as “the island of Europe”. Getting here
The islands are reached only by sea. For Ponza, ferries and hydrofoils run all year from Formia, the main port, and in season also from Anzio, Terracina and San Felice Circeo. For Ventotene you sail from Formia and Anzio. In high season it’s worth booking your place in advance, as the crossings fill up.
On the island a car is discouraged and often subject to summer restrictions: the most practical thing is to leave it in the car parks at the departure ports and get around on foot, by boat or with local transport. That’s why it’s best to choose a place near the harbour or the beaches reachable on foot.

When to go
June and September
The best months: warm sea, long days and islands still livable, without the August crush. September in particular gives you mild water, golden light and more calm on the coves. It’s the period we recommend to enjoy them properly.
July and August
Full high season: everything open and plenty of life, but also crowded islands and ferries to book well ahead. If you choose these months, move early for your boat place and your accommodation.
Off season
From October to April the islands empty out: a wild charm, but with many restaurants and services closed and reduced connections. A choice only for those seeking absolute silence and able to organise themselves, checking openings and crossings first.
